Free rider

生命保険証券の英訳をしました

　　　「主契約」「特約」「責任開始日」「未経過保険料」とか、
日本語でも難しくてこれまで避けて通ってきた言葉を、少しばかり学びました。

　　　

面白かったのは「特約」を（policy）riderと訳すこと。 何故 rider かと言うと、rider にはこんな意味があるのです
　　　: an addition to a document (as an insurance policy) often attached on a　separate piece of paper (保険証書などに添付される別紙）

　　　 : an official document that is attached to another document and that adds to or changes information in the original document (ある文書に添付して元の情報を追加/修正する正式な文書)

　　　

　　　さらにこんな定義もあります。

: A provision, usually controversial and unlikely to pass on its own merits, that is attached to a popular bill in the hopes that it will “ride” to passage on the back of the popular bill. （単独では通らないが、有力な法案にくっつけて通過させようとの目論見で追加される条項）

　　　

　　　Riderで思いだすのは、昔大学の環境問題のクラスで学んだ ’free rider’ という言葉です。
Free rider: a person who chooses to receive the benefits of a “public good” without contributing to paying the costs of producing those benefits.　 (自らは努力やコストを払わず「公共の益」をただで利用しようとする人) つまり「タダ乗りする人」のことですね。
