名詞の動詞化

前回の記事「Pretty が動詞になる？」に続き、今回は「名詞の動詞化」の例を取り上げてみます。

まずは ”doctor” です。

1. 人の目を誤魔化したり欺くために何かを修正・改ざんする。
– They were accused of doctoring the company’s financial records.（改ざんする）
– a doctored photo of the actress（修正する）

2. 飲み物や食べ物に何か混ぜ物をする。
– I think somebody doctored the punch.（混ぜ物をする）

3. 傷、人を手当する、看病する
– He had time to doctor his wounds. （治療する）
– She doctored the sick child until the physician arrived.（看病する）

次に “weed”です。

1. 雑草を抜く
– I was weeding a flower bed.（草を抜く）
2. 仕事、人、物を、間引いて良いものを残す、際立たせる
– we must raise the level of research and weed out the poorest work.（間引く）

次は“water”です。他動詞として使う場合と、自動詞として使う場合があります。

1.　他動詞 (花や動物に水をやる)

– I’ve asked my neighbor to water the plants while I’m away.（水を撒く）

– The horses had been fed and watered.（水を飲ませる）

2. 自動詞 （水が出る）

– The smell of that bread is making my mouth water!（唾が出る）

– How do you stop your eyes from watering when you’re cutting up onions?（涙が出る）

最後に、水にまつわるフレーズを一つ。

It’s water under the bridge.（もう過ぎたこと） という表現です。

If something belongs to the past and isn’t important or troubling any more,
it is water under the bridge.

　　- I can’t believe I broke up with Jason, I miss him so much!
　　- Woman, it’s been 2 months already, and he hasn’t called you!
　　　It’s water under the bridge…

日本語の「過去を水に流す」や「覆水盆に返らず」と重なる部分がありそうです。
「行く川のながれは絶えずして、しかももとの水にあらず」（方丈記）や「川の流れのように～♪」という歌の歌詞なども、人生を川に例えて「はかなさ」や「無常」を詠っています。古今東西、人の感じることは同じですね。
